English-Friendly Imports: How to Check a Japanese Game Before You Buy

Updated 2026-10-05 · Based on official publisher and Nintendo Japan pages. We have not played or tested the games mentioned.

Many Japanese packaged games include English, but “Japanese version” can mean very different things. Before importing, check three things separately:

  1. The game's languages — interface/text and, separately, voice.
  2. What is physically in the box — a full game card, a key card that needs a download, or only a download code.
  3. The console you will play on — Japanese consoles have their own language and account rules, independent of the game.

1. Reading the language information

Japanese publishers usually list languages in the product spec under 対応言語 (supported languages). Useful terms:

  • 日本語 = Japanese, 英語 = English, 中国語(繁体字/簡体字) = Chinese (Traditional/Simplified), 韓国語 = Korean.
  • 字幕 = subtitles, 音声 = voice/audio. If a page lists only 対応言語 without splitting text and voice, we record the text languages and mark voice as “Not confirmed”.
  • Nintendo Japan's software listing also shows supported languages per title. It does not separate the package and download versions, so we label those values as coming from the listing.

Example: the official Pokémon Legends: Z-A product page lists ten languages, including English, for the Japanese package, download and all-in-one versions, and adds that the language can be selected in-game even on the Japan-only Switch 2 model.[7] See the full edition comparison.

Counter-example: Nintendo Japan's listing for ONE PIECE Umi no Gochisou Restaurant (Switch 2) shows Japanese only.[10]

2. What is inside the package

Nintendo Japan describes three kinds of packaged software that run on Nintendo Switch 2:[3]

  • Nintendo Switch 2 software — only for Switch 2. It comes either as a regular game card (insert and play) or as a key card (キーカード).
  • Nintendo Switch 2 Edition — an upgraded version of a Switch game. It also runs on the original Switch, but then only the Switch content is available.
  • Nintendo Switch software — playable on Switch 2, sometimes after an update; a few titles are not compatible.

Key cards

A key card stores only the “key” to start the game, not the game data. The first time you insert it, the console must go online and download the game to system memory or a microSD Express card, so you need enough free space; the required space is printed at the bottom of the package. After that, you still insert the key card each time you play, and on a different console you repeat the download.[4]

Example: CAPCOM lists the Nintendo Switch 2 Deluxe Edition of Monster Hunter Wilds as パッケージ版(キーカード), with a flyer carrying a download number for the Deluxe Pack.[8]

Console bundles usually contain a download, not a card

Nintendo's Japanese Switch 2 bundles (e.g. the Mario Kart World and Pokémon Legends: Z-A sets) include the game as a download version that you obtain from Nintendo eShop after connecting the console to the internet.[5][6] If you want a card you can resell or move between consoles, a bundle is not the same thing.

3. The console is a separate question

Nintendo sells two Switch 2 models in Japan:[1]

Nintendo AccountOnly accounts with country/region set to Japan can be linkedAccounts from any country/region

Without a linked Japan-region account, Nintendo says the Japan-only model cannot use features such as GameChat, virtual game cards, Nintendo Switch Online, Nintendo eShop and friends.[2]

Using a Japanese console outside Japan

  • The AC adapter supports 100–240 V but has a Japanese (Type A) plug; Nintendo does not guarantee plug adapters.[2]
  • Nintendo states that packaged software sold outside Japan is not covered by its operation guarantee on either Japanese model, and that faults occurring overseas are outside warranty and repair service.[2]
  • The Japan-only model can use only the Japanese Nintendo eShop, so it cannot buy downloads from overseas eShops.[2]
  • Wireless features may only be used in regions that meet local radio requirements; Nintendo lists the permitted countries on its support page.[2]
This guide does not claim that any Japanese game works on any specific foreign console. Nintendo's Japanese pages describe guarantees for Japanese consoles only; check the official support pages for your own console.

5. Checklist before you order

  1. Find the publisher's Japanese product page and look for 対応言語. Note whether voice is mentioned at all.
  2. Check the exact edition: standard, limited, all-in-one or console bundle. Bonuses and add-ons often differ by edition and by retailer.
  3. Check the format: game card, key card (download + free space needed), or download only.
  4. Check your console: model, system language, and account region.
  5. Check the retailer listing for shipping to your country. We don't show prices or stock.
